About ten years ago I worked with a small group of local people researching the history of the Broxton area. Using oral histories, family photographs and old documents we produced a booklet in 2004, “A Local History of Broxton, Duckington and Harthill”.
As a consequence of this I was very fortunate to meet Anthony Barbour at Bolesworth Castle, where we talked about working together on a history of the Castle and its Estate, together with a history of the Barbour family. Anthony had already begun to write his family history and was also very enthusiastic about putting together a history of Bolesworth. We were making good progress when tragically Anthony died.
Fortunately, Diana Barbour, Anthony’s wife was just as keen to finish this project. Steady progress is being made and eventually we will put together a book in some form. It will be the first history ever written of this fascinating and beautiful part of the Cheshire countryside.
It is delightful to be able to share with you some short articles which give an insight into the history of this wonderful Cheshire Estate and some of the Barbour family members.
